Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a dermatological procedure that removes the outer layer with precision, revealing new skin cells underneath.

The new cells give skin tighter, younger, more radiant-looking skin. Laser skin resurfacing is also called a laser peel or laser vaporisation.

While injectable fillers are not permanent, they last a few months to around two years. So, if you are unhappy with the results, you can choose to dissolve them earlier, depending on the type of filler used.

Types of Laser Skin Resurfacing

There are two main types of lasers used for this resurfacing procedure:

  • These lasers remove the topmost layer of the skin, exposing the deeper layer. The heat generated by the laser stimulates the collagen production. The new skin that forms is soft, has fewer wrinkles, is firmer, and is less scarred than before.

Two commonly used ablative lasers are:

  • Carbon dioxide laser
  • Erbium: YAG laser

These lasers do not remove the topmost layer of the skin. Instead, they heat the outer layer to encourage the growth of new skin and trigger collagen growth. Compared to ablative lasers, the results of non-ablative lasers are less evident.

Depending on your skin concern and desired goal, your doctor will choose the most appropriate laser.

How do you prepare for Laser Resurfacing?

If you are all set to undergo laser skin resurfacing, here are a few things to do to prepare for the procedure:

  • Stop medications and supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen and vitamin E atleast 10 days before the treatment, as they can affect the clotting mechanism. Always do so only after consulting your doctor.
  • If you smoke, stop smoking atleast two weeks before the procedure. Smoking affects the body’s healing capacity.
  • Your dermatologist may prescribe antibiotics before the procedure to prevent bacterial infections.

What happens during the Laser Resurfacing procedure?

It is an outpatient procedure performed only by a trained and certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

Here’s what happens during a laser resurfacing procedure:

  • The doctor may use a local anaesthetic to numb small areas. In case your entire face is being treated, they may sedate you or administer general anaesthesia.
  • The laser is adjusted to the required setting depending upon the depth of penetration needed and applied to the target.
  • Laser resurfacing of parts of the face takes around 30 to 45 minutes, whereas treating the entire face takes about 2 hours.
  • Once the procedure is done, the doctor will bandage the treated areas.
  • Depending upon the skin condition and target area treated, healing may take from 10 to 20 days.

What should i expect after a Laser Resurfacing Procedure?

Follow your doctor’s after-care instructions to ensure normal, uneventful healing and effectiveness of the treatment.

After 24 hours of the treatment, clean the treated area four to five times a day and apply an ointment prescribed by your doctor. The ointment prevents scab formation.

Your doctor may also advise you to apply a cold compress or wrap the treated area with an ice pack for 15 minutes every 2 hours for the first 48 hours.

After the procedure, you can expect:

  • Swelling, which subsides with the medications prescribed by your doctor. Sleeping with an extra pillow for a day or two helps reduce the swelling.
  • A tingling or itchy sensation may be present for upto 3 days.
  • You may notice your skin drying out and peeling around 5 to 7 days after the procedure.
  • Post the procedure, you will notice your skin begins to look lighter and tighter.
  • You may notice your skin is pink or red for a few months after the procedure.
  • You may be extra sensitive to sunlight for many months. So, we highly recommend applying a high SPF sunscreen liberally daily and limiting your sun exposure.

It takes around a week to recover from a laser resurfacing procedure performed using the Erbium laser. For the first few days post treatment, you may experience redness or swelling in the treated area, which will subside over time.

Here are a few post-treatment measures you need to take to maximise the effects of laser skin resurfacing:

  • Take medications prescribed by your doctor in a timely.
  • Rest till your anaesthesia has worn out completely
  • Do not venture out in the sun for a few days after the procedure. Always apply a high-SPF sunscreen whenever you have to step out in the sun.
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption after the treatment can affect the body’s healing capacity.
