Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hair involves extracting platelets from the individual’s blood and injecting them back into the targeted area, usually the scalp. PRP contains growth factors, which are vital for tissue repair and regeneration.

PRP harnesses the regenerative capabilities present in platelets, holds immense potential for skin rejuvenation, and addresses hair loss concerns.

How Does PRP Work?

Plasma is the liquid component of blood. Besides plasma, blood also comprises red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets. Platelets are required for the clotting of blood but also contain other chemicals like cytokines and protein, which promote growth and healing.

When platelets are extracted from blood and injected into the treatment area, they promote cellular regeneration and healing. This helps revitalise skin and hair regrowth on the scalp.

What Happens During a PRP?

Here’s what happens during a PRP procedure at Hortman Clinics:

Around 10 to 60 ml of blood is drawn from the arm and processed in a centrifuge for 10 mins. The machine spins to separate components based on their densities.

Once the centrifuge process is completed, blood is separated into platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells.

Local anaesthetic is applied to the scalp treatment area to minimise discomfort during the procedure.

The healthcare provider will give you aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and excellent results.

The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is drawn into a syringe and injected into the specific area where increased hair growth is desired. The higher the platelet concentration in PRP, the greater its effects on hair density, hair follicle diameter, and terminal hair density.

What are the Benefits of PRP For Hair?

There are several benefits of undergoing a PRP procedure for your hair:

- A minimally-invasive procedure, which ensures minimal discomfort and faster healing

- By stimulating hair follicles and enhancing local blood circulation to the scalp, PRP ensures new hair growth and reverses hair thinning.

- Has shown remarkable hair regrowth in men and women.
