Braces

Dental braces are the tried-and-tested way to align teeth, improve smiles, and enhance confidence.

Braces are metallic or ceramic orthodontic appliances worn on teeth to move them into alignment. They effectively correct a wide range of tooth malalignments, such as crooked, spaced-out, or rotated teeth.

In addition to moving your teeth into alignment, braces also help improve your facial form, profile and aesthetics, giving you the freedom to smile confidently.

While braces are often associated with children or teenagers, anyone can get braces to correct their smile, provided they have healthy teeth and gums.

Types of Braces?

There are different types of braces to pick from!

These are stainless steel bands and clips that are placed on teeth with dental adhesive. The orthodontist places stainless steel or Nickel-Titatnium (Ni-Ti) wires in these brackets. Tiny elastic bands hold these wires in place. The orthodontist tightens the wires during every dental visit to move teeth into alignment.

These are sometimes also called clear braces and work in the same way as metallic braces. The difference, however, is that the brackets, wires, and ligatures are made from tooth-coloured ceramic material. Due to this reason, ceramic braces are far less conspicuous than metallic ones.

These braces are similar to traditional meallic braces but are placed on the back surfaces of your teeth instead of the front. Due to their position, they are not visible. Many people opt for lingual braces if they do not wish to tell others they are wearing braces.

These look like traditional metal and ceramic braces, but the difference lies in how they work. Self-ligating braces use an in-built system instead of tiny elastic bands to hold the wires in place.

  • These are also called invisible braces and comprise clear aligner trays worn on teeth to move them into position. You must wear each set of trays for atleast two weeks before moving on to the next one. You must also wear these aligner trays for around 22-23 hours daily for effective tooth movement.

How do Braces work?

Braces comprise metallic or ceramic clips placed on the teeth' surface using a dental adhesive and a metal or ceramic wire that passes through these clips.

During every dental appointment, the orthodontist tightens the wires, applying pressure to the teeth to move them into alignment.

Braces treatment takes 1.5 to 3 years or more, depending on the severity of malalignment. During your consultation appointment, discuss your treatment duration with the orthodontist.

PROCEDURE

How do braces move Teeth?

Regardless of the system you choose, the primary goal of all dental braces is to align your teeth and give you a beautiful, symmetric and stunning smile.

During every dental visit, the orthodontist tightens the wires in the brackets, which applies force on the teeth. This causes them to move into alignment.

In the case of clear aligners, the transparent trays worn on the upper and lower arches apply pressure on the teeth and move them into alignment.

Once the teeth are aligned and your treatment is complete, you must wear a fixed or removable retainer that keeps teeth in their new positions and prevents them from returning.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Braces are not painful. However, you may feel temporary mild pain or discomfort when the teeth are moving. You may also experience slight tenderness on the day the orthodontist tightens your wires. But be rest assured, these effects are temporary and will be resolved in a few days. Your doctor may recommend a few OTC pain-relieving medications to ease your pain and discomfort.

You are never really old for orthodontics. While the best age for getting braces is between 9 and 14, anyone with good oral health and strong teeth and gums can undergo orthodontic or braces treatment. To learn if you can get your teeth aligned with braces, book a consultation with our expert orthodontists at Hortman Clinics today!

The total duration of your braces treatment depends upon the complexity of your case. On average, treatment with braces takes a minimum of 1.5 to 2 years. Orthodontic treatment may take over 3-4 years in people with severely malaligned teeth.

While braces help align your teeth, they may have a few minor side effects, such as:

  • Temporary discomfort that resolves in a day or two
  • Irritation on your lips, cheeks and tongue
  • Difficulty while eating
  • Temporary speech difficulty until you get used to your braces
  • Jaw pain

Taking care of your oral hygiene is paramount while undergoing braces treatment. The plaque and calculus build-up can lead to gingivitis or cavities, delaying treatment and prolonging the duration.

Here are a few oral hygiene tips to follow during your braces treatment:

  • Brush your teeth atleast twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Rinse your mouth well after every meal.
  • Floss between your teeth and around your braces atleast once a day.
  • Swish with an orthodontic mouthwash recommended by your orthodontist
  • Avoid sticky, crunchy or hard foods that can break the brackets or dislodge them
  • Maintain your follow-up appointments with the orthodontist.

With so many options available, getting confused about the best braces for you is natural. Our board-certified orthodontists can help you determine what’s best for you. While traditional metal and ceramic braces are more suitable for complex cases, clear aligners are ideal for adults with minor malalignment.

You must avoid eating sticky foods that can cause your braces to come off.

You may have a few food restrictions to follow during your braces treatment. Here is a list of healthy foods that you can eat with your braces on:

  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Mashes potatoes
  • Cooked meat and seafood
  • Yoghurt
  • Egg dishes
  • Soft fruits
  • Oatmeal

Discuss your dietary preference with the orthodontist to determine what other foods you can add to your daily diet.
