Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment includes a comprehensive range of therapies used to treat disease of the gums and surrounding tissues.

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque and calculus build up on the teeth and gums due to poor oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing assist in removing plaque from teeth daily, and failure to do so results in it hardening to form calculus.

When plaque accumulates on teeth over time, it irritates the gums, triggering inflammation, leading to periodontal disease. Inflamed gums bleed easily. If not treated in time, the infection worsens and spreads to the underlying bone.

Signs and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Pain is usually not the first sign of periodontal disease, so most people are unaware of their gum health.

Here are a few common signs and symptoms that may indicate periodontal disease:

TREATMENT

The most common Periodontal Treatments

Depending upon the condition of your gums and surrounding tissues, periodontists use many therapies to restore health and function. The most common periodontal treatments performed at Hortman Clinics include:

This routine periodontal procedure removes plaque and calculus to promote tissue healing.

Gums cover the roots of your teeth. However, due to ageing, wrong brushing technique, and infection, gums move down (called recession).

Gum graft surgery will cover the exposed roots and prevent additional recession and bone loss. This will also reduce tooth sensitivity and improve the aesthetics of your smile.

Some individuals have a ‘gummy’ smile because their teeth appear short. While the teeth may be of proper length, they may be covered in excess gum tissue. To correct this, the periodontist performs a crown lengthening procedure during which excess gum tissue is removed, and the gums are contoured to give an aesthetic smile. The crown lengthening procedure reshapes the gums.

When the gum tissue is inflamed, it pulls away from the tooth, creating a pocket. This sets off a vicious cycle in which the pocket collects food debris, plaque, and bacteria. These pockets deepen over time, resulting in periodontitis, characterised by bone loss and mobile teeth.

This minimally invasive periodontal treatment uses lasers to remove diseased gum tissue, disinfect the area around your teeth, and promote healthy periodontal healing.

When the bone supporting your teeth is destroyed due to periodontal disease, the periodontist may recommend a regenerative procedure. They may use additional fillers, bone grafts, or tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage the body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Periodontal treatment is of various types and aims to restore the health of gums and surrounding tissues. The simplest periodontal treatment is scaling and polishing, which removes plaque and calculus around teeth and gums, allowing them to heal.

Deferring periodontal treatment or routine scaling and polishing can lead to the progression of infection, increasing your risk of losing teeth.

Depending on the type of periodontal treatment, local anaesthesia or sedation may be used to reduce pain during the procedure. However, you may occasionally feel mild discomfort post-treatment and during healing.

If your gums are red, swollen, tender, or bleeding while brushing or touching them, they may be infected. An experienced dental professional can quickly diagnose gum infection during a routine check-up.

Periodontitis cannot be cured completely, but its progress can be prevented with the right treatments and maintenance therapy. Good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings allow your gum and surrounding tissues to heal.

Periodontitis is staged based on the severity of the infection. Stage 1 is when the gum inflammation is at its earliest stage and becomes destructive.

Not treating gingivitis or the early stages of periodontitis can result in tooth mobility and, eventually, tooth loss. Periodontitis is common, but tooth loss can be prevented.
