Root Canal Treatment

When people think of visiting a dentist, they usually associate it with pain and a root canal treatment. At Hortman Clinics, however, root canal treatments are routine procedures performed by our board-certified endodontists.

The root canal is actually part of the tooth. It is the hollow part of the tooth root that contains the pulp tissue (the innermost layer of the tooth), comprising nerve tissue, blood vessels, and other cells.

So, root canal treatment or root canal therapy is a dental procedure involving the removal of infected pulp tissue to protect the tooth from subsequent infections.

What are the steps of a Root Canal Procedure?

When you arrive at Hortman Clinics with an infected tooth, our endodontists will evaluate the tooth clinically and radiographically (using X-rays). If the tooth requires root canal therapy, they will explain the procedure, which involves three steps:

This is the first step of the procedure, and it begins with administering local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort. The endodontist then removes the decayed part of the tooth, including everything inside the root canal.

Small instruments are used to clean and shape the canal. They will also use disinfecting liquid to eliminate bacteria in the canal. Once the pulp is removed and infection eliminated, the tooth dies, and you will not feel any pain.

Once the canal is adequately shaped and disinfected, the dentist fills and seals it with an inert rubber-like material. The dental filling material is then placed in the crown portion of the tooth.

When the pulpal tissue inside the tooth is healthy and intact, it provides nourishment. After the pulp tissue is removed, the tooth becomes brittle and more prone to breaking or fracture. A crown is placed on the root canal treated tooth to strengthen it and restore its form and function.

Recovery and Aftercare

Your tooth and gums have already experienced a lot before a root canal therapy. While the procedure creates a clean slate for the tooth, it takes some time before the tissues can heal.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Root canal therapy is performed under local anaesthesia, which ensures effective pain control. Most people think root canal therapy is painful, but it is not when it is carried out by a trained and experienced endodontist. Infact, root canal therapy helps relieve tooth pain.

When done correctly, a root canal treatment can last upto 20 years. It is important to get a dental filling and a crown after the therapy for the longevity of the treatment.

It is a popular myth that root canal treatment causes cancer or disease. This is not true! Root canal treatment is safe and does not cause any health conditions.

Root canal treatment does not usually cause any side effects. However, some people may be allergic to the filling material, which triggers an allergic reaction in them, giving rise to hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling.

If you feel okay, you can resume your routine after a root canal procedure. While there is no downtime or recovery after root canal therapy, the tissues take a week to heal. Your symptoms should also subside by then. If your tooth hurts for over a week, visit our endodontist immediately.

A typical root canal therapy session lasts 45 to 60 minutes.

Putting off a root canal therapy increases the chances of:

  • Irrepairable damage of a tooth and subsequent extraction
  • The infection spreads to the adjacent teeth
  • Infection spreading to the jaw bone
