Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening, also called teeth bleaching, is a dental procedure that removes stains and lightens the shade of your teeth.

From ageing to coloured foods and smoking, there are several reasons why your teeth can appear dull or yellow.

Bring back the confidence and flaunt your brightest smile with teeth whitening at Hortman Clinics.

TREATMENT

Teeth Whitening

Before we learn more about teeth whitening and why it is recommended, let’s understand a little about stains on teeth. Stains can be of two types: intrinsic and extrinsic.

These stains appear from within the tooth and can result from factors like excessive fluoride exposure and tetracycline usage by a woman during pregnancy (which affects the shade and appearance of her baby’s teeth). In some people, the enamel becomes thin as they age, giving teeth a yellow or dull appearance.

These are present outside the tooth and often occur due to environmental exposure. Drinking coffee, consuming coloured foods, red wine, and smoking are common factors contributing to extrinsic tooth stains.

Types of Teeth Whitening

Today, there are a wide range of teeth-whitening options and products available. With laser teeth wthitheing, toothpaste, toothpowders, whitening strips, and professional whitening sessions, getting whiter, brighter teeth is now possible!
Teeth whitening is of two types – At-Home & In-Office using a laser.
At Hortman Clinics, we use laser teeth whitening, including a whitening gel and an advanced laser, for quick and effective whitening results.

If you are looking for an effective and quicker teeth whitening experience, we recommend in-office teeth whitening using a laser. During in-office teeth whitening, our experts use a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide and an advanced laser to activate the whitening gel.

Laser teeth whitening is painless and takes 30 to 60 minutes. You may experience mild sensitivity for about 24 hours after the procedure. Compared to at-home teeth whitening, laser teeth whitening yields faster results, lasts upto three years and is completely safe when performed by trained dental professionals.

You can choose OTC products that treat extrinsic stains and contain less hydrogen peroxide, making them safe for home use.

Our cosmetic dentists also recommend a few teeth whitening home kits, the results of which they monitor. Home kits usually have a gel or paste to apply on your teeth, followed by a heat lamp or UV light. These are usually part of the kit.

The major drawback of at-home teeth whitening kits is that their effects are slow and take longer to become visible.

Who should get Teeth Whitening?

Anyone with dull or yellow teeth can benefit from a teeth whitening procedure. You should consider teeth whitening if you have:

PROCEDURE

How does it Work?

The teeth whitening agent used is hydrogen peroxide. In-office teeth whitening contains a greater concentration of peroxide than at-home gels. The hydrogen peroxide in the whitening agent breaks down the colour pigments in the enamel, making them porous. This exposes dentine, allowing the bleaching agent to penetrate deeper inside the tooth.

The laser beam used in the laser teeth whitening procedure activates the hydrogen peroxide and enhances its efficacy. This activation of the whitening gel with laser gives you faster results than many overnight home treatments.

What happens during a Laser Teeth Whitening procedure?

A laser teeth whitening procedure is a short, chair-side procedure. Here’s what to expect during the procedure:

If you are undergoing non-vital teeth whitening, the dentist will apply a whitening or bleaching gel to the inside of your root canal tooth to remove stains.
You may require multiple sittings depending on the shade of your teeth and your desired goal.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Laser teeth whitening is safe for most individuals. During your consultation with our dental experts, they will evaluate your dental health and determine if whitening is recommended.

Despite whitening being a safe procedure, it may cause side effects in some individuals. The most common side effect of teeth whitening is temporary tooth sensitivity. Others include:

  • Gum irritation
  • Sharp shooting pain in the teeth (which is usually temporary)
  • Permanent tooth damage (seen with repeated teeth whitening procedures or using at-home kits without consulting a dental professional)

Teeth whitening is safe for most people. However, you should avoid the procedure if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have sensitivity in teeth due to receding gums
  • You have dental prostheses like veneers, laminates, and crowns that cannot be whitened.

Each teeth whitening session takes around 30 to 90 minutes to complete. Most people require 2 to 4 sessions over a period of 3 to 4 weeks. Your dentist may also prescribe at-home maintenance therapy to increase the longevity of the whitening results.

You will be able to notice the effects of the teeth whitening procedure immediately after the first session. However, many people require multiple sitting to get their desired results. Ask the experts at Hortman Clinics how many sessions you will need during your consultation appointment.

Usually, the effects of laser teeth whitening can last upto three years. However, this varies for every individual. The longevity of teeth whitening treatment depends upon many lifestyle factors. For example, teeth whitening effects don’t last long if you smoke or consume coloured foods and beverages. Ask your doctor about aftercare precautions before undergoing teeth whitening treatment.

Different types of stains are found on teeth. These can be classified into two types– extrinsic and intrinsic.

  • Extrinsic stains: These are external stains caused by tannins in tea and coffee, red wine, soft drinks, coloured fruits and vegetables, and nicotine from cigarettes. The colour in these foods binds with tooth enamel, staining teeth.

  • Intrinsic stains: These stains develop from within the tooth due to ageing, tooth or gum injuries, tooth decay, fluorosis or medications like tetracyclines.

After a teeth whitening procedure, you are advised to avoid foods that stain your teeth. These include:

  • Acidic foods
  • Coloured beverages
  • Dark sauces
  • Red wine
  • Coffee, tea
  • Dark fruits and vegetables like beetroots, blueberries, spinach, etc
