What Is
What is BBL Therapy?
BBL, or Broadband light therapy, is an advanced phototherapy treatment to rejuvenate the skin. It is the most advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment that can give you smoother, clearer, and younger-looking skin.

How it works
How does it work?
After the initial consultation and preparation, the dermatologist runs the BBL device over the target areas. When the light penetrates the skin, it damages the pigment, tissue and blood vessels in the target region. The body’s natural healing response is activated, which causes collagen production. As a result, the collagen helps reduce most skin concerns.
BBL therapy may be preferred over other laser procedures as it uses a broader spectrum of filtered light to treat many skin conditions, and the BBL device covers a larger skin surface than lasers.
It is essential to understand that BBL therapy is not a laser treatment but uses intense pulsed light that is not as focused as a laser. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, BBL therapy uses a broad spectrum of filtered light that can be used to treat various skin conditions.
Use case
When is BBL Therapy used?
BBL therapy is versatile and can be tailored to manage several skin conditions. It works well for people with lighter skin tones, while people with darker skin tones may experience increased pigmentation.
Here are some skin conditions that can be treated with BBL laser therapy:
- Rosacea
- Acne
- Vascular lesions like spider veins
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Large pores
- Dull skin
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Sagging skin
- Melasma
- Hyperpigmentation
BBL therapy stimulates collagen production, thereby improving skin firmness and elasticity and reducing pigmentation. It also improves the body’s healing ability.
During your initial dermatologist consultation at Hortman Clinics, Dubai, the healthcare professional will evaluate your skin concern, examine your skin and review your treatment goals to determine if BBL therapy is right for you.

Preparation
Preparing for a BBL Therapy procedure?
If you are a candidate for BBL therapy, you must prepare your skin for the procedure. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Avoid getting tanned atleast 4 to 6 weeks before and after each BBL session.
- Do not use a tanning device at least 2 weeks before the treatment.
- For atleast 1 week before BBL treatment, avoid waxing, chemical peels and other treatment that use products containing retinol, glycolic or salicylic acids.
- Speak to your doctor if it is okay to stop taking prescription medicines that cause photosensitivity.
The healthcare professional will take photographs of your skin concerns before and after the BBL procedure.
What happens during BBL Therapy?
On the day of BBL therapy, your dermatologist will require you to wear protective eyewear throughout the BBL procedure.
- The doctor will clean and disinfect the target area on the skin. A clear gel is then applied.
- The BBL device is passed over the skin multiple times. Every time it is passed over the target areas, the light penetrates the skin and damages the pigment, tissues, and blood vessels.
- After the procedure, you must apply sunscreen on the treated areas once the skin cools down.
- The entire treatment procedure takes just 15 minutes to complete.

Recovery
Recovery after BBL Treatment
BBL therapy requires little or no downtime, and most people can return to their routine and wear makeup on the same day. If you have brown spots, they will get darker in the first few days after BBL therapy but come off in 5 to 7 days. Remember – do not pick or scrub any spots.
For the first 48 hours after a BBL treatment, avoid activities that cause you to sweat or your skin to flush, such as
- Exercise
- Exposure to hot temperatures
- Sauna
Avoid the consumption of alcohol or spicy food for a few days after BBL therapy.
Results
Results of BBL Therapy
Following a BBL therapy session, you can expect to see smoother, more youthful-looking skin with improved firmness and elasticity. You will notice immediate results for many skin conditions, such as age spots, sun damage, redness, and rosacea.
After 1-2 sessions of BBL therapy, the results can last for a few months. Three or more BBL therapy sessions a year can give you brighter, even-toned, fresher-looking skin that gives the impression of reverse ageing.
To get long-term benefits and effects of BBL therapy, you will require multiple treatments a year. Since we cannot control what sun exposure can do to your skin or how your skin reacts to it, it is best to use a strong SPF sunscreen when heading or avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
The results of BBL therapy typically last for around 12 months. However, to prolong the effects of BBL sessions, one must follow a good skin care regimen and use antioxidants and sunscreen daily. Most people may require follow-up sessions every few months to maintain the skin improvements.
BBL therapy is safe. However, it may cause side effects in some individuals, which may include:
- Burning at the target site
- Hypopigmentation
- Hyperpigmentation
- Scarring
In very rare cases, blisters may appear on the treated area.
BBL treatments do cause heat to build up in the target area. So, they are far more tolerable. Most people experience mild sensations but rarely pain or discomfort.
Dark spots may look darker immediately after a BBL therapy session. However, this occurs for the first 2 to 3 days after the treatment. The dark spots will become scaly in a few more days and fall off, leaving healthy skin behind.
BBL therapy effectively removes sun spots, age spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. However, these spots may return over time. For this reason, our skin experts recommend getting maintenance sessions for BBL treatment at least once a year. These sessions also help reduce pores, smoothen skin, and shrink superficial blood vessels.
