What
What is Dutasteride Mesotherapy?
Dutasteride mesotherapy is a treatment that uses dutasteride, a medication that is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to treat androgenetic alopecia (male pattern of hair loss).

How it works
How does it work?
Dutasteride was originally approved for treating BPH. However, its effects on androgenetic alopecia have been documented for years. In fact, in many countries, like Japan and Korea, dutasteride has been approved as an oral medication for hair loss.
Dutasteride is a potent medication for reducing dihydrotestosterone, the hormone responsible for androgenetic alopecia.
Here are two ways how dutasteride mesotherapy helps hair loss:
- When injected directly into the scalp, dutasteride blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the primary trigger for androgenetic alopecia.
- This treatment ensures localised medication delivery and limits systemic exposure to dutasteride.
- When the needle punctures the scalp skin during injection, the wound triggers a healing response. This increases the production of growth factors and signalling molecules that encourage hair growth in the area.
Mesotherapy also positively affects the timing of the hair growth cycle.
Dutasteride mesotherapy can be used alone or with other hair loss treatments, like oral minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, and PRP treatment.
Who
Who Should Undergo Dutasteride Mesotherapy?
If you are living with hair loss or struggling to find consistency in oral treatments or topical medications, dutasteride mesotherapy may be helpful.
Dutasteride mesotherapy is not usually the first-line therapy for androgenetic alopecia. At Hortman Clinics, Dubai, and Hortman Clinics Jumeirah, our dermatologists perform a detailed medical evaluation to determine whether you are a good candidate for dutasteride mesotherapy.

Preparation
What Happens During a Dutasteride Mesotherapy Procedure?
After a detailed consultation with your dermatologist at Hortman Clinic, your hair will be measured, and pre-treatment photographs will be taken.
- The targeted area on the scalp will be cleaned with an antiseptic shampoo.
- Local anaesthesia is injected in the treatment zone to ensure numbness and maximum comfort
- Sterile dutasteride solution is applied to the scalp using a series of injections.
- Once treatment is complete, the area is cleaned and dried, but you are not allowed to comb or style your hair.
- The entire visit takes around 60 to 90 minutes.
After Treatment
Your scalp may feel numb and appear pink or red for several hours after the treatment. Once the local anaesthesia wears off, you may be prescribed pain-relieving medications.
Risks and Potential Side Effects of Dutasteride Mesotherapy
Dutasteride mesotherapy is an upcoming therapy for hair loss. While it is safe and effective when performed by a specialist, it may cause a few side effects in some individuals. Some of these include:
- Temporary numbness or soreness from the treatment
- Systemic effects like a mild and temporary decrease in libido (sex drive) or mild
- Temporary erectile dysfunction.
These effects are temporary and usually resolve in a few weeks to months. If you experience one or more side effects of dutasteride mesotherapy, consult your doctor immediately.

Cost
What is the Cost of Dutasteride Mesotherapy?
The cost of this treatment depends on several factors, such as:
- Agent being injected
- Frequency of injections needed
- Expertise and experience of the doctor
As with any other hair loss treatment, it is essential to remember to follow all the instructions given by your doctor and keep your follow-up sessions to maintain results. Most people need multiple sessions of dutasteride mesotherapy to achieve the desired hair growth results.
How
How is Dutasteride Different from Finasteride?
Finasteride is an FDA-approved oral medication for hair loss. It works by blocking the type 2 5AR enzyme, reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) enough to produce a high success rate in men suffering from androgenetic alopecia.
On the other hand, Dutasteride blocks two subforms of DHT, making it more powerful in reducing DHT than finasteride.
Dutasteride also has a longer half-life (amount of time taken for the medication to leave the body) in the body, making it uniquely suited for localised mesotherapy in the scalp and long-term results.

Hair Restoration
Your Next Step Toward Hair Restoration
Dutasteride mesotherapy injections are an upcoming treatment for androgenetic alopecia. While the FDA has yet to approve dutasteride mesotherapy for androgenetic alopecia, when performed by an experienced medical professional, it is an effective method of delivering hair loss medication.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Every patient responds differently to dutasteride mesotherapy, as do different scalp areas. Most individuals experience reduced hair loss and new hair growth.
The results with dutasteride mesotherapy take time, similar to other hair loss treatments. Changes in hair growth become more apparent in 3 to 6 months after the treatment. It may take upto a year or more for complete results to become more visible.
Indeed, it can! Dutasteride mesotherapy can be part of a multi-therapy regimen for treating hair loss. It is often combined with oral minoxidil, oral finasteride, oral dutasteride, laser, and PRP therapy.
Our hair experts will evaluate your hair loss and determine how often you require follow-up sessions of dutasteride mesotherapy.
We usually recommend one maintenance session every 90 days. Since every patient responds differently, follow-up sessions are decided on routine checkups every 90 days.
Right after your procedure, you can return to your routine activities. However, your scalp may feel numb for several hours after treatment. Here are a few things to avoid post-treatment:
- Taking hot water baths or showers
- Contact sports
- Activities where a lack of sensation on your scalp may increase injury risk
- Strenuous physical activities and exercise
Unlike other hair loss therapies, dutasteride mesotherapy is currently an experimental treatment for hair loss and, therefore, has not been FDA-approved yet. However, doctors can legally prescribe dutasteride mesotherapy, as the medication is approved for other uses.
This treatment is not recommended in pregnant women and women of childbearing age as the dutasteride may pose risks to a developing male fetus. So, if you are pregnant or planning to conceive in the near future, discuss the same with your doctor before signing up for dutasteride mesotherapy for hair loss.
Existing evidence and clinical data suggest that a single session of dutasteride mesotherapy lasts upto 3 months. This is why we recommend follow-up or maintenance sessions once every few months to maintain your results. If you stop taking dutasteride, your hair loss will likely return within a few weeks.
