Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are customized dental restorations used to correct moderately damaged teeth.

Our expert, board-certified cosmetic dentists at Hortman Clinics, recommend inlays and onlays when a moderately damaged tooth requires a conservative approach to restore it.

TREATMENT

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are indirect dental restorations used to repair moderately damaged teeth while preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

Traditionally, dental crowns were the most commonly recommended solution for extensively damaged teeth. However, modern dentistry allows for the introduction of more conservative treatment options.

Inlays and onlays are similar to fillings in that they provide strength, structure, shape, and aesthetics. One of the main properties that makes inlays popular among patients is that they are durable. Inlays and onlays are customized restorations that are fabricated using advanced technology such as CAD/CAM. They are designed to fit perfectly into the damaged portion of your tooth.

Once completed, they are permanently bonded to the tooth using a strong dental adhesive.

Inlays

An inlay fits within the chewing surface of the tooth and is often used to repair the damage between tooth cusps. It is most suitable to treat moderate decay or tooth damage where the tooth cusps are intact and healthy.

Onlays

They are similar to inlays but cover one or more cusps. Onlays are recommended to restore larger areas of tooth damage than inlays, and always restore one or more cusps or the tooth.

Since onlays also extend over the tooth’s chewing surface, they provide additional strength and protection.

Due to their extent of coverage, onlays are also sometimes referred to as “partial crowns”.

Inlays, onlays, and dental fillings are different restorations, each with an indication. Indirect restorations, such as inlays and onlays, may be more suitable for moderately damaged teeth that require additional support or cannot be restored with large fillings.

Onlays may be a better alternative to dental crowns because they help preserve more tooth structure, while supporting and strengthening a moderately damaged tooth.

The dental onlay procedure is not painful because your dentist may use local anesthesia to numb the area. You may, however, feel minor pressure or vibrations when the dentist is shaping the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are permanently fixed on your teeth using a dental adhesive cement.

You must avoid eating or drinking for 30-60 minutes after placement of the inlay or onlay, and until the numbness goes away. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth/teeth for at least 24 hours after the placement of an inlay or an onlay.

Some sensitivity is normal after getting an inlay or an onlay, especially while eating or drinking hot or cold foods. However, this sensitivity is temporary and usually subsides within 1 to 2 weeks. If it persists beyond two weeks, report this to your dentist.

UltraClear laser is highly effective in managing ageing signs like fine lines, wrinkles, and scars and improves overall skin texture.

The results following UltraClear laser treatment become evident 2 to 5 days after the procedure and usually last a few months.

The UltraClear laser procedure is safe. However, many people may experience temporary redness or a mild sunburn sensation after the procedure. These side effects resolve themselves. If you are concerned, speak to our dermatologist or your physician.

The downtime following an UltraClear laser treatment is minimal. Infact, many people go about their daily routine right after the laser procedure. In a few cases, such as treatment for deeper wrinkles and scars, you may require 2 to 3 downtime.

One of the UltraClear laser's effects is its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Both these connective tissue fibres are known to cause skin tightening.
