TREATMENT
Teeth Whitening
Before we learn more about teeth whitening and why it is recommended, let’s understand a little about stains on teeth. Stains can be of two types: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic stains develop within the tooth and can be caused by factors like excessive fluoride, tetracycline use during pregnancy (which affects a baby’s tooth color), or natural enamel thinning with age, leading to a yellow or dull look.
TREATMENT
Types of Teeth Whitening
Today, many teeth-whitening options are available, including laser treatments, whitening toothpaste, tooth powders, strips, and professional sessions for brighter teeth.
Teeth whitening is categorized into two types: at-home and in-office laser treatments.
At Hortman Clinics, we use laser whitening with a specialized gel and advanced laser for quick, effective results.
For fast, effective whitening, we recommend in-office laser treatment. Our experts use a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide activated by a laser, completing the procedure in 30 to 60 minutes. Mild sensitivity may last up to 24 hours. Compared to at-home options, laser whitening delivers quicker results, lasts up to three years, and is safe when performed by professionals.
Over-the-counter (OTC) products can treat extrinsic stains with a lower hydrogen peroxide concentration, making them safe for home use.
Our cosmetic dentists may also recommend monitored home whitening kits, which typically include a gel or paste and a heat lamp or UV light.
The main drawback of at-home kits is that results appear slowly and take longer to be noticeable.
RISKS
Who should get Teeth Whitening?
Anyone with dull or yellow teeth can benefit from a teeth whitening procedure. You should consider teeth whitening if you have:
- Dull teeth due to ageing changes
- Generalised stains on your teeth
-
Extrinsic stains due to tobacco smoke or chewing tobacco
- Stains due to excessive consumption of tea or coffee
- Dental fluorosis
- Internal changes in a tooth, such as necrotic pulp
PROCEDURE
How does it Work?
The teeth whitening agent used is hydrogen peroxide, with a higher concentration in-office than in at-home gels. It breaks down color pigments in the enamel, making it porous and exposing the dentine, allowing deeper penetration of the bleaching agent.
The laser beam activates the hydrogen peroxide, enhancing its effectiveness and providing faster results compared to many overnight home treatments.
What happens during Laser Teeth Whitening?
A laser teeth whitening procedure is a short, chair-side procedure. Here’s what to expect during the procedure:
-
Before the procedure, the dental professional will take pre-operative photos and an x-ray to check for any tooth decay or gum recession that may need treatment prior to teeth whitening.
- Next, the dentist will clean your teeth to remove any debris, food particles, and plaque, creating a clean surface for the whitening process.
- Afterward, a protective gum gel is applied to shield the gums from any irritation during the whitening process.
- A hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied, and a laser activates it to speed up the bleaching. Each session lasts 30 to 90 minutes.
For non-vital teeth whitening, the dentist applies a whitening gel inside the root canal tooth to remove stains.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Laser teeth whitening is safe for most individuals. During your consultation with our dental experts, they will evaluate your dental health and determine if whitening is recommended.
Despite whitening being a safe procedure, it may cause side effects in some individuals. The most common side effect of teeth whitening is temporary tooth sensitivity. Others include:
- Gum irritation
- Sharp shooting pain in the teeth (which is usually temporary)
- Permanent tooth damage (seen with repeated teeth whitening procedures or using at-home kits without consulting a dental professional)
Teeth whitening is safe for most people. However, you should avoid the procedure if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have sensitivity in teeth due to receding gums
- You have dental prostheses like veneers, laminates, and crowns that cannot be whitened.
Each teeth whitening session takes around 30 to 90 minutes to complete. Most people require 2 to 4 sessions over a period of 3 to 4 weeks. Your dentist may also prescribe at-home maintenance therapy to increase the longevity of the whitening results.
You will be able to notice the effects of the teeth whitening procedure immediately after the first session. However, many people require multiple sitting to get their desired results. Ask the experts at Hortman Clinics how many sessions you will need during your consultation appointment.
Usually, the effects of laser teeth whitening can last upto three years. However, this varies for every individual. The longevity of teeth whitening treatment depends upon many lifestyle factors. For example, teeth whitening effects don’t last long if you smoke or consume coloured foods and beverages. Ask your doctor about aftercare precautions before undergoing teeth whitening treatment.

Different types of stains are found on teeth. These can be classified into two types– extrinsic and intrinsic.
- Extrinsic stains: These are external stains caused by tannins in tea and coffee, red wine, soft drinks, coloured fruits and vegetables, and nicotine from cigarettes. The colour in these foods binds with tooth enamel, staining teeth.
- Intrinsic stains: These stains develop from within the tooth due to ageing, tooth or gum injuries, tooth decay, fluorosis or medications like tetracyclines.
After a teeth whitening procedure, you are advised to avoid foods that stain your teeth. These include:
- Acidic foods
- Coloured beverages
- Dark sauces
- Red wine
- Coffee, tea
- Dark fruits and vegetables like beetroots, blueberries, spinach, etc
